Week 2, Office Applications, 07-08-2007
The second lecture consisted of telling the students what type of common applications that are used on a computer such as filing, word processing etc. Justin Freeman also gave a brief overview of zip locked documents, which are compressed files that can be used in emails. Zip locked information comes under file management. This is because the information the computer user obtains, is able to store this information away and is able to locate it again when wanting to find it again.
The first common used program that was looked at was Microsoft Word. Microsoft word was not all about word typing. It also consisted of an arrange number of different uses when typing in it. Word can also have such things as pictures inserted, change the template of the page, which all can be used for doing such things as an assignment presentation.
Excel and PowerPoint are also commonly used programs at university as well. In excel, it is a good way to present any data in the form of column and rows. This information can also be presented as graphs and charts. PowerPoint is a program that uses slides to present its information. Justin Freeman highly tells of the programs graphics is over used. Justin also introduced the “KISS” principle for when making the program.
This lecture was about getting a better understanding of how the programs work and what they are for. In the tutorial, the tasks that were given out are used to help the development and understanding of word and excel. The word task was about how to change margins, line spacing, creating headings, making referencing alphabetical order, inserting images etc.

The excel task was about the understanding of making tables and how to manipulate the columns and rows to suit the data that was inserted. This data also was calculated in sums and find averages by using the program. The information then is displayed on a pie chart and also as a column graph.

The reading is about the different ways the pictures from such things as the Internet or the camera can be stored on the computer. There are several different ways to store this information on the computer. The different ways can store it normally to compressing it so that more information can be stored. Thus making more room for other items such as music and games can be stored.
